Langston Hughes
1902 - 1967About
Langston Hughes (1902-1967) was an American poet, novelist, playwright, and social activist. From having grown up in Joplin, Missouri, then moving north to Illinois and Ohio, Langston Hughes had a complicated and unsteady childhood. His artistic contributions monumentally influenced the Harlem Renaissance, the blossoming of African American culture that spanned the 1920s. He would collaborate with musicians, such as Marian Anderson, to create empowering music, in support of the emergence of black art. Aside from his cherished poems, Hughes wrote eleven plays, short stories, and notable novels, in particular Not Without Laughter which won the Harmon gold medal for literature in 1930. His pieces in the anthology were written in partnership with Toy Harper and LaVilla Tullos.
