Eugene Broadnax (b. 1907) composed “Alas That Spring Should Vanish with the Rose”. He also published his arrangement of the hymn “What a Friend we have in Jesus” in 1955. Mr. Broadnax is featured in Black American music: past and present (pub. Hildred Roach, Krieger Publishing Company, 1992)
