About

Dr. Desmond Ikegwuonu is a composer, pianist, conductor, worship leader, producer, and educator born in Lagos, Nigeria. His music draws from classical, jazz, and indigenous African traditions, resulting in a distinctive multicultural voice that bridges concert and worship contexts. He currently serves as Department Chair of Music and Associate Professor of Music and Worship Studies at Toccoa Falls College in Georgia. Previously, he was Director of Worship Arts and Associate Professor of Music at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he coordinated the Music Matters Lecture and Concert Series and directed chapel music programming. He is the recipient of the 2023 Heart of the Scholar Award from Cornerstone University’s Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching.

Ikegwuonu’s orchestral works have been premiered and performed by ensembles including the Toccoa Symphony Orchestra, Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra, River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Houston Civic Symphony, Oklahoma Composers Orchestra, Fort Worth Civic Orchestra, Atlantic Music Festival Orchestra and Contemporary Ensemble, Aura Contemporary Ensemble, Southwestern Master Chorale, Toccoa Falls College Choir, Calvin University Gospel Choir, Cornerstone University Chorale, Apollo Chamber Players, Bent Frequency Ensemble, members of the Beo String Quartet, Southwestern Master Chorale, Meehan and Perkins Duo, Houston Grand Opera’s “Opera to Go!”. Recent highlights include the world premieres of Afrobeat Fanfare, Na So E Be (That’s How It Is), and Hallelujah Ogo. He was a finalist in the 2025 international Orient/Occident Composition Competition in Lviv, Ukraine.

His music has been commissioned by organizations such as Houston Grand Opera, MUSIQA, Aura Contemporary Ensemble, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and the Jewish Community Center Association. As founding Artistic Director of PFC Worship, Ikegwuonu leads a multiethnic collective whose music has been recorded, translated, and broadcast internationally. As an prolific songwriter and vocal arranger, Ikegwuonu’s music has been recorded by Grammy Nominated and Dove Award winning singers Ricardo Sanchez and Ingrid Rosario. His songs have received awards and radio airplay across North and South America.

Ikegwuonu holds degrees from Houston Baptist University, the Moores School of Music, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Composition.
