Camille Nickerson

Camille Nickerson (1888 – 1982), a female composer from New Orleans, Louisiana, is known for her focus on Louisiana Creole music and culture. Studying at Oberlin, Juilliard, and Columbia, Nickerson used her musical skills and inclinations to collect, arrange, and publish Creole folksong. She often lectured and performed as “The Louisiana Lady,” in classical creole garb. She was an active member of the National Association of Negro Musicians and was on faculty at Howard University until she retired in 1962.
